A lot of artists don’t think of all the steps they normally take to prepare for their in-person show apply to an online show. The format seems so different and artists often have a lot of outside help to put together a show at a venue or bar. Even the very fact that there’s a stage and decor and a setting already built in at wherever the event is taking place is a huge chunk of work.
The fact that people have the chance to get out of the house, chat to each other before the show, hang out, get excited anticipating the show, the smells, sounds, atmosphere of the place where the show is taking place all contribute to the experience. With the online show format, the artist (or their team) have to provide that as well. All on their own, and often without adequate experience or knowledge to do it.
This is why it’s easy to forget simple things like testing your camera setup before the show, checking if there’s anything in your background that’s off, and even dressing up in a costume as depending on your style, sometimes it’s just a T-shirt and jeans that constitute your costume. But will that work when you are just chilling in your room?
