How to unearth music industry’s next big tech solution
Everybody wants to have been an early stakeholder with Facebook, Instagram, Google, Netflix, Spotify. Right now, everyone in the mobile industry seems to be obsessed with 5G. What tech solution will become the 5G for the music industry?
The biggest tech conference in the world — Web Summit — actually attempts to glimpse into the crystal ball this year with their first-ever Music Innovation competition.
The organizers have selected 5 nominees out of all the music tech startups they could find and hope one of them will be the music industry’s next big thing.
Do Web Summit experts have a good eye for innovation?
Let’s look at the nominees.
- Peex.
This one is a device. Jumping onto the wearable trend, Peex developed a hybrid necklace-headset thing that a concertgoer is supposed to put on their chest and into their ears for improved concert sound.
Peex is promoted by Elton John. It claims to provide concertgoers with better sound quality and can be controlled via your smartphone using a dedicated app.
2. Show4me.
This one is a network. Show4me wants to make musicians’ lives a little easier by combining every business activity, like selling music, developing a fan base or pre-selling concert tickets, in one place.
Focusing on just one space were a musician can publish news, music, get feedback, and sell music does sound exciting, but for now the network isn’t exactly flooded by musicians or fans. Adam Lambert should play their next event.
3. Sound Particles.
Don’t get too excited, Sound Particles is a software. It looks like a great technical solution for a handful of very narrowly focused professionals in the sound effect and soundtrack business.
The program allows the production of sounds for games and cinema.
4. Vochlea.
This is a tool for musicians to convert voice to MIDI. Their Kickstarter campaign raised almost $300K. How is the program+mic kit from Vochlea better than a free app like Voice to MIDI or Voice Composer. Beats me.
5. 0W1 audio.
The final nominee is a portable smart speaker. I’m not even kidding. It’s a white speaker, hand sweep controlled, connects to streaming and radio bypassing a smartphone. Sounds cool, but does anyone these days really ever want to bypass their smartphone for anything?
