DJIBY on concert crowdfunding: ‘It’s a model that could work for many artists and help them cover costs’
On November 30, 2019, Montreal hip-hop artist DJIBY held his very first crowdfunded show at Velours Tattoo Studio. Five special guests, 3 hours of music, 50 happy fans.
The show was special because it was one of the few events in the city, crowdfunded by the artist. The fans pre-purchased the tickets before the show went into production, meaning that the production budget was met first and only then the artist started spending the money on putting together the show.
This way, up-and-coming musicians and their teams who might not be very sure how many tickets they’ll be able to sell in any given location or date can insulate themselves against the risk of holding an unprofitable show.
We talked to DJIBY about his concert crowdfunding experience and the show itself in this exclusive interview for our blog.
